Terminology

KMC - Kaltura Management Console

The KMC is an admin-only interface, it is ment to be used by the administrators of the Kaltura instance. In the KMC admins are able to see all videos, categories, playlists, flavors etc that is available on their instance.

The KMC interface is located at this address: https://api.kaltura.nordu.net/

KMS - Kaltura MediaSpace

The MediaSpace is a website akin to YouTube, Vimeo and the like. This is where most of the user interaction lies. The KMS is in most cases completely separated from the KMC.

The KMS can have a custom URL, so that it can be something like https://video.example.com/ If you need help adding a custom URL please contact your NREN.

Admin interface

The KMS have its own admin interface, the users that can login to this are the same admin users that have access to the KMC.

If you have a KMS at https://video.example.com/ then the admin interface will be accessable at https://video.example.com/admin

KAF - Kaltura Application Framework

The KAF is the Kaltura side of plugin integrations. The currently available plugins are1):

  • BlackBoard
  • Canvas
  • Desire2Learn
  • LTI Generic 2)
  • Moodle
  • Sakai

The point of having a KAF is to bring some of the tools known from the KMS directly and seamlessly into your LMS systems. Some institutions only grant Kaltura-access to students through their LMS.

The URL of your KAF interface is given upon creation of the KAF.

Admin interface

The KAF have its own admin interface, the users that can login to this are the same admin users that have access to the KMC.

If you have a KAF at https://moodle-kaf-123.example.com/ then the admin interface will be accessable at https://moodle-kaf-123.example.com/admin

API - Application Programming Interface

The API is used for programming tasks, for instance if you want to create custom software for teachers to upload videos, or have capture-hardware-boxes automatically upload videos. The API is also used by the KMC, KMS and KAF to actually do things.

The API test-console is avaliable at https://api.kaltura.nordu.net/api_v3/testme/ along whit client-libraries. If you need client libraries in other programming languages than PHP, please contact your NREN and we will properly be able to help.
